Tesseract V cymbal spot mics. What can I say, the least sexy, least exciting part of the setup by a country mile, but essential for a modern aggressive drum mix. I used 5 spot mics on the kit, it was a bit of a case of 'what have we got left'. The left hats were covered with an AKG C214, splash with a 414, x-hats and stack shared another 414 as they were practically on top of each other. The ride was miced with a Shure KSM32 and the china the last C214. These all ran into a Focusrite ISA 828 preamp with plenty of clean headroom. The last thing I want is a distorted china mic in the mix... Or do I??? The channels were all checked for phase, rejection and then manually stripped in the DAW by my faithful assistant Izzi so the mics only come live for the moment that they're required and then disappear into silence to avoid unnecessary spill. It was a long and boring task, thanks Izz, I'm so glad I didn't have to do that one!
