When Shea arrived at SickKids in critical condition via air ambulance on Dec. 2, 2020, the odds of survival weren’t in her favour. She had been struck by a driver while waiting at a school bus stop in Port Hope, alongside her 12-year-old brother Cormac, an avid hockey player, who tragically died at the scene.
Many of Shea’s bones were fractured and the injuries to her head, neck and spine were extensive. Dr. George Ibrahim, SickKids paediatric neurosurgeon, told her parents that he would do everything he could to save her—and he did. Dr. Ibrahim and Dr. David Lebel, SickKids orthopaedic surgeon, led an interdisciplinary team in an 8-hr surgery where they essentially reattached her skull and spine.
“Her recovery and progress is remarkable, really, it’s incredible,” says Dr. Ibrahim. “Shea should be very proud of what she’s accomplished.”
After 10 months of rehabilitation and overcoming so many challenges, Shea is able to walk and talk (quietly due to paralyzed vocal cords) and eat solid foods again. She’s returned to school and is happy to be back among friends.
“I will never forget the fantastic nurses and doctors at SickKids,” says Shea. She’s also grateful to her big sister Aishling and her parents for their unconditional love and support and for being by her side to encourage her throughout her recovery.
We’re building a new SickKids for legends like Shea, Dr. Ibrahim and Dr. Lebel. #SKLegends #SickKidsVS
