Move over Katy Perry—we’re living the teenage dream! As the new school year starts off, we’re looking back at MASS MoCA’s 10th annual Teen Invitational, a lively weekend celebrating nearly 300 student artists from eight high schools around the area and the teaching artists who nurture their talents. This spring, family and friends gathered in the main galleries to contemplate an impressive array of artworks created on canvas, clay, and even bowling balls. Top-prize winners received yearlong museum family memberships, contributions to their school art departments and books from the Artist Book Foundation. Two art teachers also received the Phoebe Pepper Awards, a grant established in 2019 in honor of the visual arts instructor at Drury High School, and intended to help support the individual creative practices of the art teachers who help organize the Invitational. Our kickoff party and award ceremony—featuring a speech from museum director Kristy Edmunds and music by the Drury High School Jazz Band—was a blast, and though you can’t see the smiles under everyone’s masks, we hope you can feel them. With all the incredible talent we saw this year, we’re already thrilled to see what next year brings—if you’re a student artist in the Berkshires headed back to school this fall, talk to your art teacher to find out how to get involved for 2023!
