Brazilian police said about 300 people have been arrested following yesterday’s storming of government buildings in the capital Brasilia by thousands of supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The riot, an apparent attempt to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva just one week after he was inaugurated, caused significant damage to the headquarters of three branches of federal government: the congress, the president’s office and the supreme court.
The security forces, who were initially overwhelmed, used tear gas, stun grenades and water cannon to fight back an estimated 3,000 rioters until the crowds were finally subdued.
