Sardines are basically a little powerhouse food, and for Black women specifically, they can be extra beneficial because of common nutrient gaps and health concerns in our community. Here’s why they’re worth adding to your plate: 1. Rich in Vitamin D • Many Black women are vitamin D deficient because melanin-rich skin naturally produces less vitamin D from sunlight. Sardines are one of the few natural food sources of vitamin D, which supports bone health, mood, and immune function. 2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Heart & Brain Health • Black women are at a higher risk for heart disease. The omega-3s in sardines help reduce inflammation, improve cholesterol levels, and support brain health. 3. Strong Bones & Teeth • Sardines (especially with the bones) are loaded with calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus — great for maintaining bone density and preventing osteoporosis, especially as we age. 4. Iron & B12 for Energy • These nutrients help prevent anemia, which is more common among Black women. Sardines can help boost energy and keep fatigue away. 5. Skin & Hair Health • Omega-3s, protein, and selenium in sardines can help keep your hair stronger, your skin more hydrated, and reduce inflammation that can worsen acne or eczema. 6. Affordable & Low in Mercury • Unlike bigger fish, sardines have very low mercury levels and are budget-friendly compared to salmon or tuna. #healthygirls
