Heartbroken to learn of the passing of my dear friend, confidant, and supporter Nancy Lane. I met Nancy when I had my show Harlem, USA at Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. She had joined the board in 1973, and was the longest serving board member and one time board chair of SMH. From then on she was always gracious, encouraging, and inquiring, asking about my work and career and always ready with the “What’s next?” and assuring me whatever it was, she wanted to be a part of it. Over many decades she was a steadfast supporter, always first to lend the support that would begin to move things forward. I learned so much from her at our periodic brunches and breakfasts over the years. Her support of artists and the institutions that support artists was deep and steadfast. We’re at the pre-pandemic Frieze Art Fair (1), and at National Sawdust in Williamsburg after a fabulous performance by Alicia Hall Moran (2) in these pictures. We’ve lost a stellar human being and one who lived to make a difference. Rest In Peace Nancy. My deepest gratitude to you for everything. And thanks for always being there. @aliciahallmoran @alvindhall @studiomuseum
