When we say bodily autonomy, we must mean for everybody.
Fascism must be spoken about in the present tense. It’s not coming, it’s here.
Hannah Arendt pointed out that evil can be the small, ordinary acts of simply following the rules. This shallow evil gets into everyday thinking, the thoughtlessness of following rules, even when it harms people. She called this “The Banality Of Evil”.
When a culture squeezes out thinking, we cease to recognize the moral trouble we are in. That the culture is in. When we cease to think, or cease to employ critical thinking, we can't judge what is right in front of us.
That is why a foundational rule of anti-fascism is, “Do Not Obey In Advance”. I think we can agree, we are against fascism. A collapse of individual judgment, when we stop thinking critically, is the road to hell.
When laws hurt people we must become critical thinkers and strengthen our individual judgment, because moral judgment has collapsed societally. When we fall into the fascist playbook of “othering” people who seem different than us, we play into the fascism. This is why the rise of transphobia and terf’s is especially terrifying in this moment.
Interrogate your own beliefs. Interrogate language. What does anyone have to lose by being inclusive? Nothing. In fact, the history of liberation against fascism has shown again and again, winning takes a broad coalition of diverse groups who come together in fighting fascism. We take care of each other. That is how we get out of this.
No one is free until everyone is free.
