Posted @withrepost • @freshwater_rrr Passion of Remembrance (1986) dir. by Maureen Blackwood, Isaac Julien : ( photo above of Sankofa film and video collective) right to left , Martina Attille , Maureen Blackwood , Nadine Marsh-Edwards and Isaac Julien . Our film ‘ The Passion of Remembrance’ - shifting between real and mystic landscapes, Blackwood and Julien create a visual mosaic to explore the complexity of the Black British experience and the often-overlooked intersections between race, class, gender and sexuality. (this was one of the first few films produced under the Sankofa Film and Video Collective, founded in 1983). a large majority of the team, including the director were studying at Goldsmiths University around the time of the New Cross Fire (1981) and were prompted to produce a radical/creative response to happenings of the time. watched this film during an ICO: Archival Screening Days Programme and got to meet and speak with the producer (Martina Atille – a GEM!) after the film. we spoke of how PoR was partially filmed in Stamford Hill, the process of “not remembering your voice if you haven’t heard it enough times”, the tiresome process of people hurrying to end conversations once they find out you’re a feminist and 'The Gays' 🫡 and their adjacent love for Dr Martens (which we were both wearing at the time) over the span of decades. also had a discussion with Maureen about the idea of claiming satisfaction for yourself (in light of how there was no real ‘wider’ acknowledgement of the film until it was acquired by a distributer in the US). left me questioning what was more important: focusing on surviving here, in the UK or organising for a future elsewhere? - - - - - - - - #passionofremembrance #maureenblackwood #isaacjulien #sankofa #sankofafilmsociety #sankofafilmandvideocollective
