We are naturally curious and inclusive creatures. I’m often asked how parents can better include peers with special needs and simply the answer is exposure. If your kids are exposed to difference then it will be normalized and fear will cease. And for all sorts of reasons you must also teach anti bullying behavior, but this will be true for all sorts of kids. What we forget when parenting is we have our own experience which dictates our own comforts and we came from a generation where people with disabilities were hidden away from society. It’s okay to confront your own uneasiness, and step out of your comfort zone. Pay attention at the park to the parent sitting alone, or following their kid close behind. Find buddy programs in your area. Encourage teaching skills to your kid so they feel confident to offer a helping hand to someone in need. I hope your kids will be blessed with friends who have a myriad of difference because I can’t wait to see the adults they will become! #downsyndromeawareness
