This is my last post about the Tesseract V drum recording. The final piece of the puzzle, slam mics. I almost always set up some kind of weird horrible mashed up sounding channels to give me some extra flavour in the mix. These would rarely be used in the main drum mix, but at times can jump out to provide some excitement or character. I have one setup that I return to over and over again, a crappy Golden Age G1 ribbon mic placed in front of the kit about 1m away from the snare at about a 30 degree angle towards the hi hat side. It picks up a great balance of kick snare and hats. I ran it into the Trident with loads of gain to clip the preamp a bit. I was actually pretty gentle with the EQ this time, just a 5 db treble cut and gentle hi mid boost. Then the really special sauce, the Shure M267. These amazing little boxes are 4 channel PA mixers from the 70's designed for churches, community halls etc. They feature 4 mic / line inputs mixing down to one mono output. They also feature the most brutal one switch limiter I've ever hears. Instigated to prevent damage to the PA amps and speakers, this savage optical brick wall limiter turns any signal into the most exciting, colourful, smashed to bits sound you've ever heard. Some of you may use the Soundtoys 'Devil-Loc' plugin. That is modelled on the same circuit (the previous generation M62V standalone limiter, sold separately to the M67 mixer). You'll have an idea of what it can do! Since we already had 20+ mics up in the room, I figured why not add a couple more. The mono slam sound is nice, let's try a stereo configuration. I put a pair of U87's on very low stands, ankle height and tried a few different positions and settled on one mic either side of the kit about 1m away, slightly behind the kit. I EQ'd these aggressively with a 10db peak at 2k and a 10db treble cut (keyed 10k on the trident) and again smashed them with a pair of M267's.
