Thank you @nytimes for shining a light on the fact that guns are the number one killer of children in America.⁠ ⁠ This is a uniquely American problem. Compared to other high-income countries, American children ages 5-14 are 21 times more likely to be killed with guns, and American adolescents ages 15-24 are 23 times more likely to be killed with guns. ⁠ ⁠ 60% of these deaths are homicides, and 35% are suicides. And the effects of gun violence extend far beyond those struck by a bullet: An estimated three million children witness a shooting each year.⁠ ⁠ Entire generations of Americans are being traumatized, especially Black and Latinx youth who are disproportionately affected by gun violence. ⁠ ⁠ This loss and trauma is preventable.
