We’re all thinking that #COP26 was too much and that it wasn’t enough at the same time. The process was inaccessible, the negotiations were disappointing, and our governments fell short. But there’s two things that make me hopeful. The first one is that we have grown so much as a movement that it’s not only impossible for them to ignore us, but they’re even greenwashing to appease us. Greenwashing is deceitful, and frankly should be illegal— but most importantly, it is a sign that they’re scared enough to make it appear they’re changing. We can leverage that and keep pushing. Keep demanding change and demanding honesty. The second thing that makes me hopeful is that our participations will go down in history. Our strikes will go down in history. Our speeches will go down in history. Our demands will go down in history. And in a time where history is happening so fast— this means that our actions will see the other end sooner than we expect. We have to be ready to step up in place of those who won’t. This is not only a fight to address climate disasters and pollution, it’s a fight to address the root causes that made it acceptable to exploit Mother Earth, exploit people, and exploit the future in the name of profit. I want to thank everyone who showed me determination and power. Everyone who continues to show up.
