We been surviving Covid simply by being curious. The technique of needle punching is believed to have originated in Ancient Egypt where hollow bones of birds were used as needles to bind different pieces of woven fabric together to create a new embroidered-like textile. Much of the spirit of An Only Child is built around the idea of recreating lived experiences to form new ones. Taking something old to birth something new.
For our first collection we combed the sample room floors throughout the garment district to collect excess cuttings, waste and scraps to use as raw materials. We needle punched different pieces together to create a new fabric which was cut and sewn to use throughout the range.
While this process prevents us from recreating a consistency throughout the collection we consider it to be an advantage. Each of our garments retains the soul of their fabric’s previous life to form something unique and one of a kind. Sort of like an only child.
