“As long as we’re together, doesn’t matter where we go.” Today, the TAP Outreach Team worked with @thestreetvet to provide aid to unhoused and low income pet owners in San Diego. Project Street Vet offered free vet care, vaccines, and spay and neuter options, while we hooked them up with pet supplies and food, baths, nail trims, ear cleanings, anal gland expression— you know, all the glamorous stuff. Every time we do this work in our community, we are reminded that amazing pet owners exist everywhere. The dog moms and dads we met today sometimes go without eating to ensure their fur baby always has a full belly. They wait in long lines to have their pets checked out and have lists of questions to ask the vet, to make sure they are being the very best they can for them. One of the owners we met today is night blind and living on the street. Her dog Sebastian is her eyes and guides her to keep her safe. She told us to never let anyone tell us miracles don’t exist, because Sebastian is hers and she thanks God for him every day- even on the days he gives her a run for her money. We met an owner whose chihuahua, Dukey, had to have his jaw removed 3 years ago. He can’t chew but chicken is his favorite food, so she chews up chicken for him and feeds him baby bird style. You call it extreme, we call it love. She refers to him as her “little twin baby” and her “Disney pet,” because that’s what she calls any really cute dog. She sang to him the entire time we were bathing and trimming his nails and told us that he has gotten her through some really dark times. She literally lives for this dog, and he for her. We got to see a freshly 8 week old puppy get her first round of vaccines and know that she will be protected from disease and all that comes with street life. Her mama dog was there too, and even though she hates most people other than her human mama, she let us trim her nails. No one has ever been able to do that. The people we were fortunate enough to have met today are lucky to have these animals, but the animals are lucky to have them back. They may not have a home in the traditional sense, but they have a home in each other. Today was a good day. 💚
