Ask people what they imagine an architect’s home would be like and their answers may vary from “Stunning!” to “Making a statement,” or even “Avant garde and cutting edge.” For Monica Khosla Bhargava (@monicakhoslabhargava) of Kham Consultants (@khamconsultants), all of the above fall in the category of been there, done that. So what kind of home did Bhargava want? “I already know who I am,” she says. “I don’t need my home to proclaim something removed from that reality. Because of my long relationship with design, it was important to my family and I, that the interiors of the house feel ‘undesigned’. Asymmetrical balance is the ruling design principle in the house—it’s a subtle way of shifting emphasis from objects to space.” Located in a sleepy by-lane in the heart of Kolkata, the bungalow has a lived-in feel to it. There are no flashy embellishments to draw attention. “Architecture lasts for very long, typically outliving its creator. Its impact is huge, so I feel it’s important not to create aggressive or egoistic structures. We should also build only as much as we actually need,” says Bhargava.
