Hats off to the legendary Hal Prince and all those that made Phantom of the Opera the extraordinary success that it is. I was lucky to start in the theatre when Hal and other legends were still busy working. You can see in this first picture the great Adolph Green, Betty Comden’s hair, I’m behind Florence Klotz looking at her costume designs for A DOLL’s LIFE, Paul Gemignani and more. A few years later while I was doing Long Day’s Journey Into Night in London at The Old Haymarket Theatre, Hal called me up and said: “Hey Peter, I’ve got a brand new show across the street from you and our final dress rehearsal is tomorrow and I’d like you to see it and tell me what you think.” I went the next day and when the chandelier started to fall I leapt up and nearly warned the cast when I saw the guy wire and knew Hal had me and millions more to come. Years after that I did On The Twentieth Century with wonderful Kristin Chenoweth - a show the other legends Comden and Green (and Green) wrote and Hal had directed the original production of and was able to join us for the curtain call for ours. Not long after I visited Hal in his office and we had great laugh about it all. There’s a lot to love about Broadway! Cheers Hal and Betty and Adolph and all. ❤️
