One Mine. One Life Due to the efforts of Aki Ra, a former child soldier of the Khmer Rouge. The Cambodian Landmine Museum now houses thousands of bombs and artillery that dotted the country’s landscape for 50 years. A big majority of these are still active and as deadly. Cambodian nationals who often stumble upon these contraptions are often poor and rural farmers who had no idea about what it could be. During our visit Hak told us his tale of woe. He lost his entire family by accidentally stepping on a US grade landmine that resulted in him losing his leg. Now, Hak voluntarily works at the museum as its Director and as a teacher for the Cambodian Volunteer Help Organization in Siem Reap.
