I’ve been performing live with DJ’s for a years now, and whilst there’s always been a want to try and learn the skill myself, a lack of confidence and self-labelling of being ‘bad at tech’ got in my own way. So I put it off (for years) because feeling uncomfortable and overwhelmed is well...uncomfortable and overwhelming. But since moving to London a month ago, I found myself so inspired by the passion + presence for electronic music. So. I decided to start. When you’re a professional / established in your craft, it’s unsettling to feel like a COMPLETE novice again and totally out of your depths, but of course it’s here where the growth happens. Where the discomfort and the challenge do their thing to shape growth, since change doesn’t occur within familiar paradigms. I only filmed my daily practice sessions for myself to remember what I did, but watching them all (there’s a lot!) made me smile, because I can literally see my confidence growing, and the ability to show up and be autonomous in support of doing music is joyous.
