As the client’s inner world guide, my role is to offer a container that allows them to fully be with their experience. The therapeutic frame holds much more than cognitive and behavioral adjustments; it becomes a psychologically transformative ritual process. In exploring the notion of resilience, the prefix “re” seems to be the antidote to the lifesaving dividing quality of “dis”. In roman mythology, Dis is the ruler of the underworld, Donald Kalsched highlighted that not Lucifer or Satan, but Dis, which comes “from the Latin meaning to divide or negate”. Kalsched wrote, “Dante’s poetic insight that the violent monster in the center of hell is psychologically equivalent to the disintegrating energies of the other world unconscious helps us to relate the poems medieval Christian imagery to the clinical situation where we are very familiar with “Dis” as disassociation, dissociative identity disorder (DID), disavowal, disconnection, disease, and even disaster.” It seems fitting that “re” might be an antidote to this division and fragmentation caused by dis. “The prefix re-, which means “back” or “again” precludes hundreds of English words such as; regenerate, remember, repair, relationship and recover. These words describe a relational model that brings psychic elements back together again, focusing on wholeness and integration. In the recovery model Mark Ragins described, “Illnesses don’t recover, people do. We can directly cure illnesses, but we can’t directly “recover” people. They have to be the center of their own recoveries. We can help give them hope, empower them, promote self-responsibility, and create opportunities for meaningful roles, but they have to do the actual work of rebuilding.” This suggests that the therapeutic relationship is a space for this experience to occur, therapists are not doctors curing illness, they are holistic and attuned guides that aid in leading the client back to themselves. Therapy is a sacred ritual container for inner healing and naming the magic of psychotherapy supports the client in reclaiming their unique gifts, restoring their inner resources and facing the numinous with an experienced healing professional.
