What does sustainability mean in fashion? 🌎👗 I have found myself in the fashion world a lot in the past few months— always feeling a little strange when surrounded by designers and models. But also seeing it as a great opportunity to tackle one of the biggest faces of the climate crisis: Fast Fashion Fast fashion refers to the process of abiding by micro-trends which makes fashion companies produce immense amounts of clothes. This results in 80 billion to 150 billion of clothes being produced each year! Not only does this represent a massive amount of pollution and fuels overproduction and overconsumption, but it also means that the workers who have to keep up with production face many workplace injustices from having to work in sweatshops to getting paid 2-6 cents per piece of clothing made To top it off, clothing production is often off-shored, which means that workplace regulations in countries like the US do not apply. Companies choose to work overseas to avoid workplace and environmental regulations. This results in less awareness of the conditions of workers, as well as increased carbon emissions So, where does Sudtainable Fashion fit in? Firstly, the high fashion world has the responsibility to set the tone when it comes to what is and what is not acceptable. If brands at fashion week that set and create trend don’t abide by worker protection, non-polyester materials, circular and low impact products, and high quality, long lasting pieces, why would other brands follow? At the same time, if we as consumers don’t have high standards and ask where our clothes come from, we are unlikely to get that information There are many more things to say about fashion, and I am in the process of learning— but the main takeaway I have as of now, is that it’s the industry with most capacity to change in the short term. Fall in love with your clothes! Prioritize thrifting and sustainable brands.
