The problem with insulin resistance in under a minute 😅⏰ Why are low carb and keto diets so popular?🤔 Could be because so many Americans have insulin resistance! We already learned how stress and inflammation rack up cortisol. And chronically high cortisol (along with other factors) contributes to insulin resistance. ❌ Insulin resistance prevents carbs from being used properly.❌ With insulin resistance, your liver and muscle cells don’t respond to insulin to let blood glucose in, so your body secretes MORE insulin (increase the signal). First you’ll see high insulin levels, then high blood sugar, and eventually (without nutrition and lifestyle changes) type 2 diabetes.[1] !!️ Insulin resistance ALSO prevents fats from being used properly!!️ Insulin resistance inhibits the storage of blood lipids in adipose (body fat) tissue. Because of this, blood lipids are elevated and excess fats are deposited around the organs (visceral fat), in the liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver), skeletal muscle, pancreas, and heart (heart disease).[1,2] This is arguably the bigger problem😬 Metabolic syndrome is closely linked (if not caused by) insulin resistance.[3] Symptoms include: ⚠️ large waistline (>40” men, >35” women) ⚠️ high blood pressure (>130/80 Hg) ⚠️ high blood sugar (>100mg/dL) ⚠️ high blood triglycerides (>150mg/dL) ⚠️ low “healthy” HDL cholesterol (<40mg/dL men, <50mg/dL women) 😳 Shockingly, as many as 1 in 3 Americans have metabolic syndrome![4] The good news is: insulin resistance is REVERSIBLE in the early stages!💯 Next time I’ll share some simple lifestyle and nutrition habits proven to help insulin resistance💜 (not medical advice) xo, Sarah #thenutritionistmom References👇🏼
