Arizona Republicans have kicked off the state’s legislative session with three separate bills that would criminalize some types of drag performances, in addition to a bill that would require parental consent before allowing school faculty to use a student’s pronouns.
Senate Bill 1026, introduced by Senator John Kavanagh, would bar people and/or entities that organize “drag shows targeting minors” from receiving state funds. Senate Bill 1028 and Senate Bill 1030, introduced by Senator Anthony Kern, would significantly limit drag shows. The former bill would prohibit “adult cabaret” performances on public property or in locations where they could be viewed by a minor. SB 1030, meanwhile, would classify venues that put on drag shows as “adult oriented businesses,” and would require them to carry a specific permit to put on performances. This would prevent drag venues from being located near schools, playgrounds, childcare facilities, private residences, and places of worship.
