At the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga sanctuary in the Republic of the Congo, implementing best-in-class welfare for the chimpanzees and other wildlife in our care is essential! Each day JGI caregivers conduct routine evaluations and observations of all the chimpanzees at the sanctuary. Supporting and caring for over 140 chimpanzees is not an easy task, and it’s important to make sure that every chimpanzee has a happy, healthy community to call home. In order to provide these safe communities, JGI caregivers monitor the behavior and personalities of all the chimpanzees, then make sure they are placed into groups with other chimpanzees that best reflect their personalities. Also, every month JGI caregivers use JGI's own Chimpanzee Welfare Index (CWI) created by Dr. Rebeca Atencia to measure all the chimpanzees’ weights and overall health.
