Moments later, a very self-important suited man and his wife were given the table next to this one only for him to announce he couldn’t sit near another person, “that person” motioning to me. He treated his wife like an abused pet, calling for her to sit down where he had moved declaring to the staff that he couldn’t possibly sit where they asked. They calmly told him he had to move back. He stormed out. Sorry for his wife, I mouthed to her, “Leave him.” On his reservation, they said, he had made a note: “Lawyer, birthday.” As he walked out, I saw my friend, a brilliant woman, arrive and all that could go through my head was ... “Damn...we’re lucky people. We’re free.”
