Good Girl Syndrome đź‘„
Always kind, obedient, modest, complaisant- parents always praise these qualities in young girls, but the same qualities can interfere with building a career and relationships in adulthood.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be polite and helpful, the problem begins when growing up a good girl turns into a woman who tries to please everyone, forgetting about herself. The life of a good girl is built on a deep belief “in order to be loved, I must be perfect”.
Such a paradigm begins to form in childhood as a desire to win the love of a significant adult. This often happens if mom or dad was emotionally unavailable. Perhaps they treated the child coldly, weren’t present in her life or demanded perfectionism.
The sad truth is that adult women are not supposed to be “good girls”. Its actually even dangerous.
First of all, not hearing her own needs, ignoring them by constantly trying to please others, she accumulates stress, which is constantly growing and at some point will spill out: depression, anxiety attacks, eating disorders, psychosomatic symptoms.
Second of all, good girls are the ones who are being used the most. Unfortunately, world doesn’t work the way we see it in movies where you just have to be kind and nice in order to live happily ever after.
There’s many people who look for someone weaker to use them, abuse verbally or physically, put down to feel better about themselves.
The women who are strong minded, always have your own opinion, not easily accessible, who won’t do things for others if it conflicts their own needs & interest are often called b*tches. But in reality those b*tches end up living happier, healthier life and building better relationships. When men say they love good girls they mean they love to use them. It’s always nice to have someone who is always available, helpful, caring around but it becomes boring really soon.
Do you see similarities with your behavior when I describe a good girl? I can write a part 2 about it, let me know in comments ⬇️
