Founded in 1965, the Gombe Stream Research Centre at Gombe Stream National Park was created to continue Dr. Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking studies on chimpanzee behavior, ecology, and more. Observing the lives of chimpanzees not only gives us more insight into chimpanzee behavior and communities, but it also gives us key insight into our own lives, health, and innovations for conservation, primatology, health, and beyond. Did you know that chimpanzees’ brains are very similar to humans’? Not only that, but the growth and development of chimpanzees is very similar to humans too! For chimpanzees, infancy lasts for about five years. Just like human children, youthful chimpanzees are filled with curiosity and love to explore and play! Chimpanzees also make nests to sleep in - just like beds! But while most people only have one bed they return to each night, chimpanzees make a new nest every night. Are you inspired by the research Dr. Goodall shared from Gombe, Tanzania? Did you know that research continues to this day through JGI's Gombe Stream Research Center - the longest running wild chimpanzee study in the world?
