In his dark and heavy graphite drawings, Julian Adon Alexander achieves familiarity and mystery. ‘Bricks’ highlights Alexander’s skilled portraiture, which in style, is inspired by his love of comic books and anime. While he often renders friends and passing pedestrians, each portrait is semi-autobiographical. “This piece encapsulates the anxiety I would feel as a child when seeing an abandoned home and feeling that there could have been someone, or something, inside. Some elements imply activity in and around the home, such as footprints in the snow and small eyes peering out at the central figure.” This abandoned urban landscape signals Alexander’s world-building, which blends the character of Bloomfield, Connecticut and Brooklyn, New York into a fictional city influenced by his reality. Deeply contrasting against a field of darkness, the blonde moon and glowing snow are pops of light that draw viewers into this small-scale scene. Alexander illustrates the blackest black possibilities of his signature material by guiding eyes to miniature details, attention to texture, and the range of tones made possible by pushing a pencil. @snakebone_, 'Bricks,' 2022 Graphite on toned paper. 11 x 8.5 in.
