Stockholm+ 50– this post is very late, but I was just able to process everything from the last two months so here it goes 🥰 Regarding Stockholm, I think it’s the l event that has showed me how the UN works around climate. The UN is convening conference after conference, making people fly from all over the world for events that only last a few days and are not engaging civil society as they should. This year, some of the UN climate events are and will be Stockholm+50, Bonn (for the SBs), UN Ocean Conference in Portugal, Climate Summit in NYC, COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, and l others... how are we as youth supposed to attend all these places? I spent so much time looking for organizations to sponsor my trips, on getting Visas, on securing accommodation— is all of this preventing us from focusing on messaging, demands, community building, and community organizing? For Stockholm, many youth had their visas denied by the Swedish embassy, primarily African youth, we shouldn’t have to spend hours trying to get people places— it should be easy so that our stories can be heard. I know COP 27 is already looking impossible, with prices reaching thousands of dollars per week just for accommodation. Like @ayisha_sid said, UN spaces are for all peoples in the world. We should all be able to have access, not only corporations and governments— that’s why we haven’t gotten further, because our stories are missing from the decision making tables. Not to say that these spaces aren’t vital-- but we have to be able to re imagine how conferences can be more powerful, efficient, inclusive, and regenerative I have been traveling from the day my school year ended until now. Countless events, countless encounters— and what we have learned is that the power that comes from the streets has to be translated into UN language for us to be more impactful The simplified demands for heads of state are: 1- Sign the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation treaty @fossilfueltreaty 2- Make Ecocide a crime @ecocidelaw 3- Climate finance to Global South ($100 billion) Help us amplify these demands! Let’s get this language in resolutions, and let’s create local versions of these goals 🌎❤️
