Here's a natural great shark breach. No decoys to force it or to make it dramatic, just a natural breach.

White Sharks in California are also breachers like those in South Africa. But here, it's suggested they do it for different reasons. In South Africa, the technique is primarily a surprise strike method on seals. But here, it's very different. One of the leading thoughts from local scientists is that they primarily do it to essentially "scratch" their backs. Sharks carry copepods, or tiny parasites, that are believed to irritate their skin. So breaching is believed to be a way to loosen them and/or free themselves from these copepod loads.

One thing I aspire to do is compile overhead film data on these sharks to see if these local breachers have copepod loads. It will take time, but by counting the percentage of sharks with large copepod loads I may be able to get an idea about the reasons for these breaches. It's not nearly as dramatic or entertaining as "made for TV" breaches but then again, learning isn't always entertaining or dramatic. It's a process.
