“I cannot breathe”. “Black woman killed by police”. “Father and son charged with murder of unarmed black man Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia”. No single crisis or event in recent history has so sharply magnified the country’s racial disparities and inequities as the coronavirus. It has infected people in every state, in big cities and rural communities, and from every economic class BUT left a permanent loss for lower socioeconomic backgrounds. It has infected and killed men and women of all ages and all races, affected people of color the most. White people now can understand what fear and uncertainty feels like. African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and others feel this fear and uncertainty ALL THE TIME. The virus is not only showing us how pervasive inequality is, it’s also giving us a moment to think about how structural racism creates higher anxiety for people of color. Truth be told America is not ready to face the truth of racism........ we need change......... -
