Take a close look at this 18th-century three-panel screen. What catches your eye? This screen is one of a pair and has more than enough detail to delight any viewer: colorful birds perched and in flight, ornate vases holding beautiful bouquets, and golden objects hanging from an arbor at the top. Fabric fiends may notice that the thread is knotted, not woven. That’s right—these designs were made from thousands of tiny knots of yarn or wool in various colors. The bright yellow background was a departure from muted backgrounds in earlier screens and other upholstery from the Savonnerie Manufactory. It became so popular that the manufactory used brighter colors moving forward. 🖼️ Pair of Three-panel Screens, about 1714–40, Savonnerie Manufactory after cartoons by Jean-Baptiste Belin de Fontenay and Alexandre-François Desportes #StopScrolling #DecorativeArts #HomeDecor
