Rest In Peace Pierre Bergé (14 November 1930 – 8 September 2017). Without Bergé, the YSL we all love and collect would not have existed—Yves would have been a wonderful designer regardless but their love story (starting in 1958) transformed Yves' approach to design and interest in art, and Bergé's business sense transformed the whole fashion industry. Bergé understood best how haute couture could be used to propel the sales of ready-to-wear clothes, perfumes, handbags and other accessories—basically, the whole way we understand couture today (as a spectacle bringing in customers for affordable goods) is due to him. Additionally, he created and was elected president of the Chambre Syndicale du prêt-à-porter des couturiers et des créateurs de mode, the founding president of the French Fashion Institute and a founder of the Museum of Fashion Arts, as well as the founder of the Fondation Pierre Bergé — Yves Saint Laurent. Not only did he revolutionize fashion, but he was a great patron of the arts, president of the Opéra Bastille, founder of the Berber Museum, saviour of Cocteau's home and the Jardin Majorelle, and much more. Their love affair and its denouement has been discussed in documentaries and portrayed in movies (both negatively and positively), but there is no denying that Bergé was a force whose belief in the power of beauty touched the world. 💔💔💔 #pierrebergé #ysl #yvessaintlaurent #fashionhistory
