“Bam Bam” has got to be one of the first reggae songs I ever heard as a kid. Quintessential not only to the Caribbean catalogue but music itself, I’ve yet to see it played and fail to command a crowd. I don’t know if that day in 1982 when sister Nancy sang “I’m A LADY IM NOT A MAN, DJ IS MY AMBISHAN (ambition)” simply speaking to her existence as the first female vocalist in reggae she knew how insanely relevant that defiant energy would still be today. If you aren’t familiar, Sister Nancy’s story is REALLY important. Even though “What a bam bam” is arguably one of the most sampled reggae songs (I’m talking Kanye, Jay Z , lauryn hill, every annoying SoundCloud producer in the world lol) she didn’t receive royalties for 34 years and then after a legal battle only got back $ for the last TEN. Imagine hearing your voice in movies, radio etc and being unacknowledged. Crazy. Anyways lol this story has a good ending cuz now shes 60 years old, touring the fucking world absolutely KILLING it. I got to open for her last night and I’m still in so much awe. A true legend.
