Everyone should be able to get timely and essential abortion care without unnecessary barriers. Period. But this isn’t a reality for far too many people, as we saw in the devastating story of a 10-year old forced to leave their home state of Ohio in order to get an abortion. Ohio is currently enforcing a 6-week abortion ban with very limited exceptions. As our policy expert Elizabeth Nash explains, exceptions are written to be extremely narrow and difficult to interpret. This only fuels fear and confusion—especially for providers and patients—and pushes care further out of reach. 🚨 Limiting access to abortion is the point. In fact, horrifying stories like this get attention because they expose the true agenda of anti-abortion policymakers. However, the focus of media attention around these extreme cases risks losing sight of the people most impacted by abortion bans, including: ➡ Young people ➡ People with low incomes ➡ Black and other people of color ➡ People who are already parents and more If 26 states ban abortion as we’ve predicted, more people will need to cross state borders (or even multiple ones) to access the care they need. People from marginalized backgrounds will be most affected and may not be able get care at all. We agree with Elizabeth: When it comes to supporting survivors, exceptions are not the answer. The only way to ensure access and support patients’ decision making is to end all restrictions and bans on abortion care.
