Had the honor to shoot and be featured for the @fillingpieces Unity for Suriname Football Jersey! Today, July 1st marks the annual celebration of Keti Koti. Meaning ‘broken chains’ in Sranantongo, it commemorates the 1863 (1873 to be more accurate) abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. Keti Koti is not only a commemoration, but a celebration of the people who fought for abolition, and the rich cultures that persevered and flourished. In the spirit of today's celebration, I have partnered up with Filling Pieces and their Unity For Suriname initiative. They tapped an entirely Surinamese team and captured several talents of Surinamese descent, to highlight the diversity and talent of the Dutch-Surinamese diaspora. The goal of the Unity For Suriname project is to raise awareness for Keti Koti and to collect funds that go to a Surnamese charity. For that reason, Filling Pieces created a football tee and a special pin to which proceeds are completely donated. The Unity for Surinam Football Jersey and pin launch today at 12:00 PM (CEST) at Fillingpieces.com and the flagship store. All proceeds will go directly to the Ilonka Elmont Foundation. An important Surinamese initiative, whose mission is to support underprivileged and special needs children, and who will help us create a variety of workshops that enables these children to freely indulge in music and arts.
