The announcement of the upgrades in early 2022 was timed to coincide with the Transgender Day of Visibility, when the Biden administration released a slate of planned reforms focused on equity for trans citizens. In addition to the scanner revamps, Biden stated he would seek greater adoption of the “X” gender marker on official documents including passports, and approved its use for travelers using TSA’s PreCheck system.
