Twenty-one years 💔💔💔 I wrote this a few years ago and now repost it every anniversary:
I doubt that any place will ever impress me more than Windows on the World, the restaurant located on the top floor (107th) of the North Tower (Building One) of the World Trade Center, which I went to as a small child for my father's 43rd birthday, a few months before we moved to London. That view—with Lady Liberty watching over, it swept across all of Manhattan from the dining room, and over the rivers to Ellis Island, Staten Island and Brooklyn from the bar—it's impossible to describe its beauty, the true majesty of the city. And that restaurant... The designer of WotW, Warren Platner, was a master. Every detail of the restaurant, the bar, the foyers, the mirrored elevator bank of dreams—all impeccable, never surpassed. Add in Milton Glaser's flawless graphics (also used on the china) and it really was perfect. As Tom Roston wrote in his book, 'The Most Spectacular Restaurant in the World': "Many New York restaurants hold a special place in the hearts of the people who cherish them. Windows on the World was one of them, but it was something more. Not only did it become the highest-grossing restaurant in the country during its 25-year existence, it also became a landmark that embodied the city’s greatness.” I feel very grateful that I was able to experience it—even as a child I knew that it was extraordinary.
Windows on the World opened on April 19, 1976, and was destroyed in the September 11 attacks. On that morning nineteen years ago today, the restaurant was hosting regular breakfast patrons and the Risk Waters Financial Technology Congress. At 8:46 a.m., five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the northern facade of the North Tower; 73 Windows on the World employees lost their lives. #neverforget #911 #windowsontheworld #warrenplatner #laurakittyinteriors
