“I am interested in how black southern culture and spirituality spread via the internet,” says Good Black Artist Darin Cooper of his latest work ‘Like this Dove.’ “In this work, I printed a still from an old vine I watched growing up. It depicts a pastor holding a dove which he then throws in the air; failing to fly, it falls to the crowd’s disappointment. This video was comedic, but I also had a familiarity with it and a connection to my art practice.”
Reproduced among a field of blooming color, the central lithograph signals failed spiritual release. Disintegrated pigments blend a color palette similar to human decomposition; deep purples, burgundies, and bright pops of vibrant color present an abstracted rigor mortis. Through his mixed-media material choices, Cooper references the cemetery environment with small patches of synthetic grass included to contemplate Black life six feet under ground.
