Hijrah Reflections - Kohl (Traditional Ithmid from Madina) “Even on the Hijrah, amid fear and fatigue, the Prophet ﷺ used kohl - teaching us that care for the body and clarity of sight are part of spiritual resilience.” Kohl (كُحل) is a traditional natural eye cosmetic and eye-care substance, widely used in the Arab and Islamic world for both beauty and health, and it also has a strong Prophetic tradition. Kohl in the Prophetic Sunnah The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The best of your kohl is ithmid; it brightens the eyesight and makes the eyelashes grow.” - Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah Benefits (Traditional Understanding) • Strengthens eyesight • Protects the eyes from dust and glare (especially in desert environments) • Enhances eyelashes • Has cooling & soothing properties Important to Note: Traditional ithmid kohl is different from some modern commercial kohls, which may contain lead.
