It’s been 10 years since the murder of Trayvon Martin, and I still remember watching the news that day, wearing a hoodie on my college campus, and protesting because Trayvon’s life and legacy changed my life. This Saturday, Travyon would have been 27 years old, as Black Lives Matter has grown from a hashtag to a cultural force and this special issue of @nymag attempts to tell the story of the first decade of Black Lives Matter, the movement—as well as the country it moved and begs the question I often ask myself, Are Black lives any safer?
