A year ago from today I forged these iron sculptures with my own hands. Some months later my beloved and admired friend @filipcustic used them for his @vmagazine feature in one of his beautiful images.
These sculptures were conceived around the idea of martyrdom. Martyrdom is a concept that has always been close to my heart. The fact that someone is willing to give away their life for what they stand for is beyond powerful.
The metal flowers have arrow points on their ends, symbolizing the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, my very own take of his martyrdom.
Transforming the metal sheets with my hands using a hammer and turning them into flower petals has also a narrative about transformation.
The power of the artist to transform nature, transforming a flower into a weapon. A flower has a life cicle, it blossoms into something beautiful and then dies. Making metal flower, gives me the power of transforming nature, transforming something fragile like a flower petal that has a life cicle into a inmortal, dangerous, stiff and deadly weapon. This idea is not only present in these pieces, but trough out my practice as a jewellery designer.
Transformation is one of the quality that makes us human, it’s the power of spirituality, of physics and of will power.
The inspiration behind them, is my grandfather Juan Solivellas’ sculptures that he made circa 1992 in mallorca. He made a family of forged iron thistles, which you can see on the third slide.
