Now listen. I know what you’re thinking: “Christmas Ornaments? REALLY? For the love of God, woman, can you just move in, already.” No. I cannot. Though hear me out. I had one last batch of Joyful I needed to create for a custom order and while I hadn’t intended on taking video footage, it ended up being the perfect opportunity to provide context to these tiny curated squares. Process needs context. Otherwise the art is only half the story. I’m trying to remember and demonstrate this whenever possible. The truth is, this reel took way too long to make, but I’m all right with that; because if it reminds even a single artist or would-be artist that painting afraid is actually the Good Stuff, then my time is justified. No risk, no reward. This is what I know. After five years doing this professionally, another five as a means to pull myself out of the grave that is anxiety and depression, I can attest that the being afraid part is in fact the precursor to transcendence. And not in a new-age-y way, but in that real, yank you by the gut and show you all the parts of yourself you’d rather not share or show anyone way. Because, of course, that’s where the beauty is.
