Coverstar @kukuawilliams X Lula Issue 31: From working on the Sainsbury’s bakery counter to making her modelling debut for Miu Miu at Paris Fashion Week, Huddersfield born Kukua Williams’ rise has been meteoric. Scouted at 22 at a music festival in Bristol, Williams was a late bloomer in model terms, but that hasn’t stopped her making her mark. Not only has she worked with the likes of Celine, Erdem and Valentino, but she’s using her voice to shed light on the discrimination that Black models have to face in the industry. In 2021, the 26-year-old went viral when she shared a heartfelt post on Instagram about being detained in an Italian airport for 24 hours due to nothing more than the colour of her skin. One year on, she’s still not letting racism hold her back.
