Did you know it’s Old Rock Day? Here in the park, we're surrounded by rocks, and they are all very old compared to us. But sometimes we want to give recognition to those extra old rocks. The oldest rocks in the whole park are in the and Kaibab Formation, which is about 270-258 million years old. This formation makes up only a very tiny part of the park and are not easy to see for most visitors. An easier set of old rocks to see during your visit to Zion is the Moenave Formation. These are easy to see when you walk around at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and along the Pa'rus Trail. It is made up of thin layers of sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone deposited by ancient bodies of water. The Moenave Formation is about 200 million years old - That's back when the supercontinent Pangaea was beginning to break up and the dinosaurs were starting to take their first steps on Earth. Pretty old, indeed! Do you want to know more about Zion's old rocks? Visit our website or attend a Ranger Talk. Ranger Talks occur every in the Visitor Center plaza. You can check our website’s events calendar or the NPS App for more information. #ZionRocks #Geology #yourparkstory
