lil bit o’ story time: (tl;dr get a maple latte) shortly after realising i was gonna be moving into gowanus, i befriended brad @bowerybird and @gowanusdredgers who, among other things, sorta manages the shipping sailboat @schooner_apollonia a couple months ago, ruby @wubywambie and i went to the docks down in red hook to meet the schooner apollonia and have a rollicking good time. the area was filled with fellow stinky hippies, some folksy string music, and all manner of artisanal goodies for sale. ngl it was the most portland shit i’ve experienced this side of the hudson river. what’s super cool with this shipping vessel is that it takes goods all up and down the hudson river btw nyc and hudson entirely on wind power. when the ship is docked everything is delivered with an e-bike charged by solar panels on the ship. talk about zero-emissions. awh yeah. so anyways, among the goodies sold off of the schooner was some maple syrup from eric at viking maple @ericthered.ny i bought a lil pint of it and brought it back to the shop and concocted a maple latte and it’s now become the second most popular of my milky drinks (behind a basic latte, naturally). the plan was to throw this maple on the next schooner shipment, but that didn’t work (next time!). today out of the blue eric pulls up to the shop with maple in tow, having made the delivery personally! everything in this shop has a story, a person behind it, and a tale to tell. point to a thing in here and i’ll give you an ig post worth of babble, i promise. i’m so happy to know so many other micro-businesses and the people behind them making them tick.
