šŸ“¢ Today, an anti-abortion ballot measure in Kansas could strip abortion rights from the state’s Constitution—clearing the way for the legislature to impose a draconian abortion ban. As our policy expert Elizabeth Nash pointed out, anti-abortion groups have been working to spread misinformation in anticipation of this measure, so let’s get 3 facts straight: 1ļøāƒ£ Abortion in Kansas is already heavily restricted and it’s difficult for people to get care. As of 2020, 98% of Kansas counties did not have an abortion provider and none were in the western half of the state. 2ļøāƒ£ Kansas abortion opponents' claim that they don’t want to ban abortion is laughable. Removing constitutional protections is step 1 in a playbook we’ve seen before. (In 2018, Alabama adopted a similar amendment and in 2019, a total abortion ban was enacted that is currently in effect.) 3ļøāƒ£ There has also been ugly rhetoric disparaging those who come to Kansas seeking an abortion. Traveling out of state for care requires overcoming huge financial and logistical hurdles. Add the limited number of clinics and restrictive policies—it’s clear that Kansas is a tough option for getting care and nothing about it is easy. 🚨 The stakes for abortion rights and access in Kansas couldn’t be higher. And there is much more at stake for those most impacted by restrictions and bans—Black and Brown people, low-income individuals, young people and LGBTQ patients. Everyone deserves bodily autonomy and the ability to determine their own lives and futures. We share Elizabeth’s hope that this will be possible for people in Kansas and beyond.
