In my latest newsletter I explore William Klein's rarely seen documentary 'Hollywood, California: A Loser’s Opera'—so rarely seen that there is virtually nothing about it online or in academic papers on Klein's documentary work. I was lucky enough to see the sole known print of it last month at @anthologyfilmarchives so I did a deep examination of Klein's 1977 journey through Los Angeles, the people he met and the places he went. As I can't share a clip from it (I dearly wish I could!), here is a wonderful clip from one of Klein's final feature film, 'Le Couple témoin'/'The Model Couple' (1977). In this highly prescient satire, Klein foreshadows the coming of reality TV while criticizing mass media and government surveillance. A young couple (André Dussollier and Anémone) are chosen by France's Ministry of the Future to be test subjects in the development of an ideal City of the Future. Housed in a modular prototype apartment, their every action is televised live and dissected by the public, talk show hosts and the government. Watch it for the great apartment, and the biting social commentary. Production Design by Françoise De Leu, costumes by Agnès B. @agnesb_officiel and Georges Bril, and music by Michel Colombier. 💚💚💚 #williamklein #agnesb
