IN THE BEGINNING ...1986
So I thought I would share a glimpse of when I started to express my art and individuality.
These are a few of my looks from my high school days where I began my adventure into drag, celebrity impersonation and club kid looks.
I grew up in a the suburb of Lakewood Calif. I was one of those kids who got bullied a lot. They called me Gay Glen before I even know what gay was. Guys wanted to kick my ass after school for no reason at all. Some kind of instinctual insecurity on their part. It was difficult and painful growing up in a world that for a large part seemingly hated who I naturally am. And said I was going to hell. I thank God I got through that. But many people don’t. It subsequently took me longer to gain self-esteem and confidence. Drag helped me reclaim my self worth. It was a huge and powerful source of strength, purpose and freedom.
And still is.
The 80s happened with boys wearing make up such as Boy George, Pete burns, Duran Duran, Steve Strange, Leigh Bowery, Adam Ant and many others. They gave me the green light to try it out myself.
It was at Peanuts night club that I saw a drag troop called The Cosmetixs. The group included celebrity impersonation and avent-garde club kid looks. I was also inspired by artists like Grace Jones, Nina Hagen, Siouxsie Sioux and Cyndi Lauper.
At the time my favorite singer was Terry Nunn from the band Berlin. I instinctually copied her look and performed her music. Thus started my career as a celebrity impersonator, drag queen and club kid. I would perform wherever I could. Whether that be at nightclubs or on top of tables at house parties. 😜
You are an original, a masterpiece, an individual light. Allow yourself to shine.
