The US Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade had an immediate and devastating impact on abortion rights and access across the nation. As our recent report shows, more than 40 abortion clinics stopped offering care in the 11 states that implemented bans as of July 24—just one month after the Court’s decision. Among those states: ❌ Georgia, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee implemented bans starting at 6 weeks of pregnancy, when most people are not yet aware that they are pregnant ❌ Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas banned abortion completely and no longer have a single clinic providing abortion care In addition, the 7 states with total bans accounted for 80,500 abortions in 2020. People in those states will now be forced to travel longer distances to get care, self-manage their abortion, or carry the pregnancy to term. Let’s be clear: Abortion access in many parts of the country was already dire before Roe was overturned. But this situation will likely deteriorate even further, as more states adopt bans in the coming weeks and months. Kentucky began enforcing a total ban earlier this week, and Florida has begun rolling back access with a 15-week ban. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, legal uncertainty over the status of the state’s pre-Roe ban has caused providers to stop offering abortion care. 🚨 In total, as many as 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion now that Roe is no longer in place. Clinic closures resulting from these bans will only deepen existing inequities in abortion access, especially for Black and other people of color, people with disabilities, young people, immigrants and people with low incomes.
