A massive winter storm has killed about 50 people across the U.S., with more than half the deaths occurring in western New York. Mayor Byron Brown of Buffalo called it a "once-in-a-generation storm." The storm brought 80 mph winds and more than four feet of snow in places, toppling power lines, trees, and buildings. Brown told NPR's Morning Edition that his city's emergency responders have gone "car by car" to perform hundreds of rescues of stranded motorists, and that over 20,000 people were without power at one point.
